Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) yield response to irrigation systems and moisture regimes was evaluated in field experiments at the university farm, Junagadh, Gujarat, India, for 2 consecutive seasons, 2003-04 and 2004-05. The highest yield of 2305 kg/ha was obtained with drip irrigation when applied at IW/CPE=1.0 during the first 3 stages, i.e. vegetative, flowering and boll development and at IW/CPE=0.4 during last stage, i.e. boll maturity. The vegetative stage was found the most sensitive to water stress followed by flowering, boll development and boll maturity. Water use efficiency (WUE) was highest (3.84 kg/ha mm) with drip irrigation at IW/CPE of 0.4 continuously for whole season, while WUE was lowest with border irrigation at 40% depletion of ASM during vegetative stage. There was 80% improvement in the water use efficiency with the application of water through drip at IW/CPE of 0.8 compared to border irrigation at 40% depletion of ASM throughout the season.
