Top tips for taste: Asparagus continues to be one of the most anticipated British crops. These tasty, long-lived perennials were assessed in a four-year Plant Trial at RHS Garden Wisley
Fresh British asparagus spears are as eagerly awaited as the first picking of peas and the earliest sun-kissed tomato of the year. Our asparagus season is usually mid-April to early June (although this is supplemented by imports, particularly from Peru and USA). Modern, all-male cultivars (from breeding programmes in Europe, New Zealand and Canada) have virtually eliminated self-seeding, and have extended the harvesting season with improved quality and yields.
