A passion for the senses

Three generations of Delbards have been devoted to making their French nursery internationally renowned for excellence in fruit and rose production. On a visit, ALEXANDRA BAULKWILL learned some of the finer points of sampling their flavours and scents. ZEST FOR LIFE and an enthusiasm for beautiful things are qualities for which the French are known. Henri Delbard, Chairman of Pepinieres et Roseraies Delbard - the biggest commercial grower and breeder of fruit trees and roses in France -- epitomises this Gallic outlook. Here is a man -with a mission: to educate gardeners into better appreciating what their senses can tell them about their plants, and the under-utilised realms of scent and taste in particular.
