West Acre Gardens

Within the boundaries of a once-neglected walled garden lies an exciting nursery. ROY LANCASTER seeks out some plantsman's treasures off the beaten track in Norfolk. WEST ACRE GARDENS lies within high brick walls close to the village of that name in west Norfolk. To find it requires a sense of adventure and some patience, for it is buried away in a rural idyll where country lanes contrive to confuse. Persistence, however, will be amply repaid with one of the best plantsman's nurseries I have visited. My search for it last year led me past flower-filled verges where scabious, greater knapweed, lady's bedstraw and wild parsnip created a multicoloured fringe to fields of golden stubble in which bales of straw stood stacked like apartment blocks.
