The work being done by Chris Rose Associates under the Champion Picker Project, funded by the HOC, is beginning to yield results, a timely development given the increasing costs and availability of seasonal labour. Chris Rose, speaking at the recent BIFGA Technical Day, updated members on his findings in the field, given the enormous variations in pickers' performance identified around the industry, and his observation that whilst tree management has achieved great progress in recent times, man management performance has not. "My colleague Kathy Strong and I have modelled the performance of fruit pickers at harvest and found enormous variations between the best and the worst, giving opportunities for managers and owners to improve the performance of their workers by anything from 10% to 30%," said Chris.
