In Tyne and Wear and in Manchester, two pioneering gardens have been established by local residents. KEVIN SMITH discovers the positive effects that gardening can produce within a community. COMMUNITY GARDENS it would seem are becoming increasingly popular as houses and individual gardens get smaller, particularly in urban areas. These little green oases are places where residents can play, garden, relax and even grow food, and can help enhance community spirit, benefit wildlife and even reduce petty crime. Both the gardens that I visited, one near Newcastle, the other in Manchester, are fine examples of the trend.
