Explosive finale

ROBERT WEBBER, Head Gardener at Bristol University Botanic Garden, which is set to relocate in 2005, records the fierce flames of the spectacular Hot Border. THE vibrant Hot Border at Bristol University Botanic Garden has had a brief, comet-like existence, but meteoric success, and as the garden moves again for the fifth time in its history, this is the last season that visitors can see the Hot Border in all its glory. It began life in 1999, when I divided our huge herbaceous and tender perennial collections, on the basis of colour, between the main herbaceous border and a sunny 10sq m (108sq ft) bed in our Victorian kitchen garden.
