Soil expert questions effectiveness ofcurrent nutrient practices

When a leading soil agronomist states that there is only a 38% overall uptake of major soil applied nutrients achieved by field crops, then fruit growers may need to reconsider the traditional nutritional practices that the industry has employed for the past 60 or 70 years. The BEST Fruit Discussion Group invited Robert Plumb of Soil Fertility Services Ltd to share his experiences working across a range of field-grown crops, and identify whether new practices should be considered given the ever-increasing costs of fertilisers, and the impact that heavier yielding orchard systems may have on the reserves of nutrients in orchard soils.
