摘要

An analysis of accidents in Indian opencast mines carried out by DGMS revealed that slope failures and dump failures have started assuming an upward trend in recent years.(DGMS tech circular No. 2 dated 06.07.2010). Small rockfalls, which may involve hand-sized rocks weighing only a few kilograms, can cause fatal injuries to workers away from the protection of large machinery. Massive highwall failures containing a million cubic meters of material or more can be fatal even for heavy equipment operators. Even the most carefully designed slopes may experience failure from unknown geologic structures, unexpected weather patterns, or seismic shock.
