'Someone batting in my corner': experiences of smoking-cessation support via text message

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is estimated to cause over 5 million deaths each year worldwide; in the UK, two-thirds of smokers report that they would like to stop. The txt2stop trial demonstrated that mobile-phone-based text messaging support can double smokers' chances of quitting at 6 months (10.7% txt2stop versus 49% control, relative risk 2.20, 95% confidence interval = 1.80 to 2.68, P<0.0001). Participants' experiences of the intervention were explored, with a focus on differences in accounts between those who achieved biochemically verified continuous abstinence at 6 months and those who did not.
