Profile of NGOs involved in management of MDR TB in Mumbai before rollout of DOTS Plus

Prevalence of tuberculosis resistant to at least rifampicin and isoniazid (multi-drug resistant tuberculosis - MDR TB) in Mumbai is known to be higher than the national prevalence.1 Diagnostic facilities for MDR TB and Cat IV regimen for treatment of MDR TB were made available in Mumbai in 2012. Before these services were made available, local NGOs played a key role in making expensive long duration second line anti-tuberculosis treatment accessible to the patients from Mumbai. This paper describes the NGOs that were involved in management of MDR TB and services provided by them just before DOTS Plus became universally available in Mumbai.
