Scullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a classic Western herb, with a long history of use in the herbal systems of North America, and more recently in Europe. Nineteenth century herbalists used this herb, once referred to as "mad dog scullcap," to treat rabies and muscle pain, while the Cherokee and Iroquois nations looked to it to encourage menstruation. Today, herbalists use it to treat a number of conditions, including high blood pressure, premenstrual syndrome, tension headache, and muscle spasms, but mainly prescribe it to relieve stress. In fact, it's one of the most frequently used relaxant herbs in common practice.
