As performing dot blots involves the decanting of liquids, the processing of dot blots seems superficially to be a technique that is readily automatable. In practice, however, advances in automation have been hampered by the difficulties of dealing with the screwing and unscrewing of manifolds and handling the membrane. This article describes a new technique based on the use of disposable 96-well filterplates which gets round such problems and makes a truly automated dot blot system a practical reality.
