The potential for pheromone-mediated mating disruption of Enarmonia formosana was evaluated by attaching tube dispensers to the trunks of mature ornamental cherry trees (Prunus cultivars), in suburban streets in New Westminster and Vancouver, British Columbia, during June-August 1995. Dispensers released either a blend of (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate (49.5%), (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate (49.5%), and (Z)-7-decenyl acetate (1%) at a rate of 29 mg/day, or (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate alone at 27, 4 or 0.5 mg/day. Asticky Delta trap baited with a septum impregnated with (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate (40μg), (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate (60μg), and (Z)-7-decenyl acetate (1μg) was placed in each tree. Captures of males in treated trees were significantly reduced compared with control trees in all experiments. It is suggested that disruption of pheromone-based communication in E. formosana around individual cherry trees is feasible with a pheromone blend or with (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate alone.
