When one travels through Hesse, with it's open plains and forest clad mountains, one is more likely to think of the Grimm brothers than of biotechnology. There is an idyllic romance about the score of medieval villages and towns. The bigger cities are characterised by an inspiring mix of old 'Schlosser', market places and post-modern glass fantasies, masking the wealth of biotechnology expertise within the area. In the words of Dr. Rhiel, Minister of Economics, Transport, Rural and Urban Developmentfor Hesse: "Hesse is one of Europe's most important centres of traditional chemical and pharmaceutical companies and biotechnical producers. It has enormous advantages as a location. Regulatory issues, formation of production units, qualified personal, logistic solutions and access to international capital and markets - the competences and experience needed in all these fields are fully available in Hesse."
