Hulyn Smith - The passing of a Camellia Icon

It comes with great sadness that I write about the loss of Hulyn Smith, but it also gives me great satisfaction to share my thoughts with all his camellia friends and new ACS members who did not have the pleasure to know or meet Hulyn. I first got toknow Hulyn after attending a Valdosta Camellia show at that time held in November. I was invited to see his collection and then visited him often during the bloom season. After those many months, and then years, we became good friends, and Hulyn would test products for me that I worked on at my job with Griffin Corp, an agricultural chemical company. Hulyn was very interested in trying anything that would improve, or speed up the growth, or improve the flowers of his camellias and was willing to take the time to test it. At that time I was working on the product Spin Out to control root growth of container plants. I got Hulyn to do the very first test of Spin Out on camellias and the results were very positive.
