Whirlpool Corp.'s Marion, Ohio, division uses a stamping press operation to produce dryer bulkheads. A conveyor under the press removed scrap ranging from 0.08-in.-thick slugs to 7-in.-long pieces. Sometime sharp scrap became caught under the conveyor belt, tearing, cutting, or breaking it. In addition, die lubrication saturated the belt, causing belt slippage. Belts had to be replaced up to twice monthly, resulting in downtime and additional maintenance costs. Whirlpool purchased modular plastic belt conveyors (MPB series) from Dorner Mfg. Corp.
