Insights on Breeding Hybrid Camellias for the Landscape

In 1970 I was living with my parents in Alameda, California while attending college. It was at this time that I took notice of a group of rather large evergreen shrubs, almost treelike in habit with quite large flowers of varying colors including reds, some mottled with white, and light but intense glowing pinks with seemingly everything in between. There were also several different flower forms. Some had a single row of petals and a central golden boss, others had irregular, highly folded petals, and some were very formal in appearance.
