The decision by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) to consider lowering its threshold limit value (TLV) for manganese has prompted some early consternation within the manufacturing industry. Tony Rizzuto, ACGIH's executive director, said no decision will be made until at least 2010 on whether to reduce the TLV from 0.2 mg/m~3 to 0.02 mg/m~3. That current TLV has been in place since 1992, according to Rizzuto. He explained further that when the ACGIH issued its Notice of Intended Changes in January, the association raised the possibility of lowering the manganese TLV and other TLVs too. Rizzuto said the TLV chemical substance committee probably had studies that suggested the TLV needed to be lowered. Those studies are not identified in the January document.
