DRG type case based prospective payment have now been implemented in a number of European countries, and are gaining momentum. Some old-timers have had such systems for more than a decade, such as Ireland, or Portugal, and new countries, like France and the UK, are joining the club. In each countrie, there has been idiosyncratic adaptations of the initial Medicare model, bearing on the classification schemes that are used, but also on the precise funding mechanisms that are implemented, according to the overall setting of the health care delivery system and financing.
