Sterilisation procedures are highly effective contraceptive methods. As their effect is meant to be permanent, they are intended for men and women who have completed their desired childbearing. The procedures involved are all technically rather simple and most have been extensively assessed in all their aspects. Male sterilisation is achieved by vasectomy; female sterilisation consists of a variety of procedures all aiming at occluding the Fallopian tubes.
