The Role of Calcium Antagonists in the Treatment of Hypertension in Patients With Diabetes A Reappraisal Based on Recent Evidence

Calcium antagonists have been available for the treatment of hypertension for over 2 decades. Although their effectiveness in lowering blood pressure is well, recognized, concerns have been raised about their efficacy in preventing the adverse outcomes associated with hypertension, especially in people with diabetes. Over the past decade, a large number of randomized, controlled trials addressing this issue have been conducted. This article reviews those trials, specifically in regard to patients with diabetes and finds that these agents are effective in reducing the adverse outcomes associated with hypertension.
