Bernhard Naunyn is one of the giants in the history of medical science He worked successfully in many clinical areas including the pathophysiology of gallstone disease, hepatogenic icterus, aphasia, the clinical course of mitral insufficiency, the mechanisms of fever, the relationship between blood flow and CSF pressure, epilepsy, syphilis, and the clinical categorization of transdates and exdates. He is best remembered, however, as the guiding force in developing the first clear understanding of the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus type 1 and in developing the first successful treatments for it
