Screening Frequency of Celiac Disease and Autoimmune Thyroiditis in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Turkey and Comparison With Last Surveys

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is associated with celiac disease (CD) and Hashimoto thyroiditis. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of CD and thyroid antibodies in children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Data from 134 patients were analyzed from 2003 to 2008. All patients were screened at the beginning and at 6-months interval for CD and Hashimoto thyroiditis. Glycosylated hemoglobulin, free thyroxine, free triiodothyronine, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and antithyroid peroxidase antibody levels were evaluated by chemical immunoassay method and tissue transglutaminase antibody level were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We determined that 11% of the patients had positive antibodies for CD and 9% of the patients had positive antithyroid antibodies.
