Multiple Adenomas of the Pituitary Gland: A Case Report

The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical course of a patient with a prolactinoma and Cushing disease. We present a case report and review the relevant literature on multiple pituitary adenomas. A 42-year-old woman with a 15-year history of a prolactinoma reported progressive weight gain, deposition of fat around the neck, rounding of her face, and hypertension. She had an elevated 24-hour urine-free cortisol of 209 mug/24 hours and an adrenocortico-tropic hormone (ACTH) level of 111 pg/mL. MRI revealed multiple pituitary tumors. She underwent a hypophysectomy in August 2005. hnmunohistochemical stains confirmed at least 2 separate and distinct secretory tumors: ACTH and prolactin. Multiple pituitary adenomas are uncommon. The mechanisms of development of multiple pituitary adenomas still remain unknown.
