Acute suppurative thyroiditis: A forgotten entity: Case report and literature review

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is an uncommon but life-threatening entity that is difficult to differentiate from the more common viral form of thyroiditis. The authors report a case of streptococcal thyroiditis diagnosed by needle aspiration in a 34-year-old woman who had no risk factors except gingival bleeding on daily dental brushing. The clinical features and etiologic agents in AST are reviewed and an overview of clues to early diagnosis are highlighted. The authors report those cases of AST examined at the American University of Beirut Medical Center during a 20-year period and highlight the clinical presentation, any associated illness, treatment, and complications.
