Bismuth is indeed not so well-known as many other metals. However, it was known from the XVth Century in Germany,, probably, called "Bismutum" by Paracelsus.Bismuth has so many properties that make it a unique metal:· Volume expansion on solidification· Widest range between melting and boiling point· Lowest thermal and heat conductivity of all metals and the most diamagnetic one Non-toxic or the least toxic of all known metals· Lowest absorption for neutrons· Considered a "soft" metal as lead· Wets glass and ceramics· Pharmaceutical, cosmetic and bacteriostatic properties
