By the middle of March many millions of newly potted young herbaceous perennial plants from specialist suppliers will be pushing out roots in their final containers. On nurseries throughout the country they will be adding to the huge numbers potted inSeptember and October last year and grown on over-winter under protection. Millions more will have started their lives on the nursery further back still, and were potted last summer. And through all the weeks between March and October this year, growerswill be potting young perennial plants delivered from suppliers in England, Scotland, Holland and Belgium. They will range in size from tray-grown seedlings in cells around 2cm in diameter, to plants in 5cm plugs, larger ones still in small pots, and bare root planting material. Many will have been raised from seeds, others from cuttings, some by micropropagation.
