Perhaps the most encouraging comment of all was the observation by Jo Strickland of Whetmans' Pinks that there had been more young growers in evidence among the visitors. The ones she was referring to were the rising generation in established family businesses. These are just the sort of young men and women who have all too often in recent years decided not to step into their grower parents' shoes, but make careers in other fields. Exhibitors did agree that total visitor footfall was probably somewhat down on last year. More pleasingly, it was similar on both days, and there was still plenty of action almost right through to the close of the show on the second day.
