Biopesticides - a viable alternative to conventional chemicals

Dr Paul Sopp of Fargro, speaking at tlie Four Oaks sliow last month suggested that growers are going to see biopesticides as a very viable alternative to conventional chemicals. Their use willremove problems with chemical residues and reduce many environmental effects. Perhaps the most important advantage they have is that, for many, there is a much reduced likelihood of the pest or disease developing resistance. Biopesticides are divided into three groups :-Microbials - the name given to products derived from micro-organisms. Botanicals - describing plant extracted compounds. Semio-chemicals -commonly pheromones. He used as examples products which are already on the market or very close toit, in the UK.
