Controlling the most important pests of the protected ornamentals industry was the ambitious subtitle of a technical seminar held last month. Tobacco Whitefly and Western Flower Thrips alone took up around half the total time in a full day's programme. John Sutton was there for 'The Commercial Greenhouse Grower'. For the not so young in a gathering of nearly a hundred members of the British Protected Ornamentals Association, there could have been depressing reflections. These two pests were unknownon British nurseries only twenty-five years ago.
