IN MEMORIAM

William F. Barr (Bill) was born 20 October 1920 in Oakland, California; he died 17 December 2011 at home with his devoted family in Moscow, Idaho.Bill was our major professor at the University of Idaho (U of I), but more than that to us, he was our dear friend. He mentored 39 other graduate students during his years as a professor at the university, to which he came in 1947 from the University of California, Berkeley after receiving his B.S. and M.S. in entomology. One of his first projects at the U of I involved the biological control of weeds, the release of Chrysolina spp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) against St. John's wort, Hypericum perforatum L., in northern Idaho. This was chronicled in the March 1952 issue of Popular Mechanics by O. A. Fitzgerald. During 1950, Bill took leave to finish his Ph.D., his thesis being "A revision of the North American species of Cymatodera (Coleoptera, Cleridae)". His M.S. thesis was "The Cleridae of Lower California". In 1942, while an undergraduate, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, eventually flying a P-38 in the European Theater.His love of beetles was not only for Cleridae but also Buprestidae, and that is shown by the decoration and name he gave his plane, "The Tan Buprestid" (Fig. 1), named after the first beetle he described, Acmaeodera ephedrae Barr.
