Description of the larva of Onthophagus orpheus orpheus (Panzer) (Coleoptera : Scarabaeidae : Onthophagini)

The larva of Onthophagus orpheus orpheus (Panzer) is described here for the first time. This species occurs throughout southern Canada and the eastern United States, from Maine to Florida and west from the Dakotas south to Texas. The species is divided into three subspecies, O. orpheus orpheus (Panzer), O. orpheus canadensis (Fabricius) and O. orpheus pseudoorpheus Howden & Cartwright. All reared specimens were O. orpheus orpheus. This species is associated with woodlands. Adults collected for rearing came from northern mesic hardwood forest (principal tree type Quercus velutina Lam., sandy soils) and southern mesic hardwood forest (principal tree type Q. rubra Lin., sandy loam soils).
