Phosphor-chloride glass-ceramics containing rare earth ions Nd~(3+)/Yb~(3+) are fabricated with a heat treatment to cause the precipitation of calcium-chloride nanocrystals in which doped Nd~(3+)/Yb~(3+) ions are concentrated. For the crystallized samples, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), absorption, and emission spectra have confirmed that rare earth ions were trapped in CaCl_2 nanocrystals. Optical properties and up-conversion processes among the Nd~(3+) ions in phosphor-chloride glass ceramics have been investigated. Different UV and blue up-conversion emissions have been obtained by exciting at 570 nm. The involved up-conversion mechanisms and the effect of nanocrystals have been explained.
