The European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles — the status of species occurring in Britain and Ireland

The European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles was published early in 2010 and covers a first tranche of the beetle species which are entirely dependent on the habitats provided by dead and decaying wood. This is the first time that an IUCN Red List has dealt with an ecological grouping rather than a taxonomic one. 436 European species have been assessed using the IUCN Guidelines for Application of IUCN Red List Criteria at Regional Levels. These include 86 species listed in the 2008 Checklist of Beetles of the British Isles, representing about 10% of the British saproxylic fauna. The British and Irish species included are in the families/subfamilies Lucanidae, Cetoniinae, Eucnemidae, Elateridae, Bostrichidae, Trogosittidae, Cucujidae, Erotylidae, Mycetophagidae, Pythidae and Cerambycidae (Cerambycinae and Prioninae). Just two British species have been assessed as having 'Endangered' status (Limoniscus violaceus and Triplax lacordairii), one 'Vulnerable' (Ischnodes sanguinicollis), eleven 'Near Threatened', and three 'Data Deficient'. The rest have been assessed as having 'Least Concern'.
