Platinum prices rose at a gradual pace during the first half of 2014 and slipped lower over the course of the second half of the year. Platinum prices averaged $1,386.25 during 2014, down 6.8% from 2013 levels. Mine supply disruptions due to South African labor strikes during the first half of the year were the primary factor supporting platinum prices during the first half of the year. Platinum mine supply is extremely concentrated, with 70% of this supply coming from South Africa. Any actual or possible disruptions to mine supply in South Africa typically tend to be supportive of platinum prices.
