Philonthus confinis Strand (Staphylinidae) new to East Kent

Philonthus confinis Strand was first recognised in Britain by A.A. Allen (1971) on the basis of a single male specimen collected by P. Harwood at Burnham Beeches, Bucks., in 1902. The aedeagus was figured by Allen (1971) and more recently by Lott and Anderson (2011), being distinguished from the morphologically very similar P. varians (Paykull) by the linear rather than spatulate paramere and the parallel-sided median lobe. P. confinis was subsequently not recorded in the British Isles until the capture of a single male specimen from horse dung in South Essex during 2007 (P. Hammond, pers. comm.).
