The use of chromosomal evidence for the separation of difficult species pairs and/or cryptic species is well known (e.g. Wilson, 2001). Dr M.G. Morris as part of the preparation for his forthcoming Royal Entomological Society Handbook for the identification of this group of weevils, requested help from the authors for some clarification of the taxonomic status of the weevils Anthonomus rubi (Herbst) and Anthonomus brunnipennis (Curtis). These species are regarded as good species by Kevan (1965) and Morris (1977, 2008), but as conspecific by Hoffmann (1954).
