Litargus balteatus Le Conte (Mycetophagidae) outdoors inCambridgeshire (Vice County 31, Hunts.)

Litargus balteatus Le Conte was first added to the British List as L. coloratus Rosenhauer byTomlin & Joy (1908) based on 14 specimens collected by Mr. J. Ray Hardy "in June 1907 inSherwood Forest from a fungus growing on a dead holly log, and from the leaves about it".This species is sometimes referred to as the hairy fungus grain beetle or stored grain fungusbeetle, both names indicative of its more typical association with moulds on stored foodproducts indoors. However, there have been three recent outdoor records from East Anglia.Martin Collier (2007) collected one at Stanford, West Norfolk (TL8392) "on 10 July 2003 inPolyporus squamosus fungus". Ron Payne collected one from straw bales at Northwold,Norfolk (TL757961) on 7 January 2007 det. M. Collier (Martin Collier, pers. comm.). On 15July 2007 Roger Booth (2008) took a single specimen at Haddenham, Cambridgeshire(TL4376) "by sieving a large heap of manure, stable sweepings and grass cuttings at the sideof a fenland drove road".
