Psammoecus bipunctatus (Fabricius) (Silvanidae), widespread in Ireland

Psammoecus bipunctatus (Fabricius) was added to the Irish list by Bullock (1930). There appears to have been few published records since, however these include finds from counties Galway, Offaly and Tipperary, reported by Regan and Anderson (2004). While primarily searching for spiders I have encountered this distinctive beetle at sites in counties Cork, Fermanagh, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Meath, Monaghan, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford. Clearly this wetland beetle is widespread in Ireland. Many of my finds have been from among the dry debris which accumulates at the base of Carex paniculata tussocks.
