US funds research to find mustard gas antidote

THE US National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded two New Jersey-based universities US$23.3m to develop a treatment for people exposed to chemical weapons. Researchers from Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) will spend five years working towards an antidote for mustard gas, a chemical weapon that causes severe burns and blisters. The research will be carried out at the CounterAct Research Center, which was established by the two institutions with a similar grant in 2006.
