Dow profits rocket while BASF's stall: Chemical giants' earnings both grow

DOW CHEMICAL has beaten forecasts and reported a 73% rise in its Q2 net profits, while rival BASF'S earnings have fallen short of expectations, depressed by high oil prices, the weak US dollar and the suspension of its operations in Libya. Driven by higher prices and record sales growth in emerging markets, Dow's net profits climbed to US$982m, from US$566m in the same period last year. Total revenue for the three months to the end of June grew from US$13.6b to US$16b, bearing . analyst predictions of net profits o US$877m on revenues of around US$14.7b.
