When competent isn't good enough

I was introduced to this concept several years ago by a pair of North American medical students who were undertaking a new longitudinal clinical placement programme. When quizzed on why they had volunteered for this 12-month, community-based and integrated programme rather than staying in the relative safety of a big general hospital, they simply said that they wanted to be the best they could possibly be. It was too easy to hide amongst the throng of students in the general hospital, bumping along from rotation to rotation, and just getting by.
