Medical students who indulge in risky behaviour do not believe it will affect their clinical practice - despite growing evidence to the contrary. A number of studies support the theory that doctors' own attitudes about risk-taking affect clinical practice - the rate at which they order tests such as chest X-rays, thyroid screens or pap smears, for example, or the number of emergency department patients with chest pains they admit.
