Nearly all of Japanese chemists, ceramist and material scientists are focusing their attention on mesoscopic world. Meso is defined as a prefix meaning intermediate or middle, as in denoting inactive optical isomer, the form of intermediate inorganic acid, the middle position in cyclic organic compounds, or a ring system with middle ring position. but recently the term is also used for metallic materials widely, in Japan in particular. Mesoscopic or mesostructured steel is defined as steel which is composed of crystals, size of which is 1μm or less to 100nm or optical microscope to electron microscope size, while mesoscopic structured aluminum is composed of 3μm size grains. Mesostructured materials have 2 to 50 nanometer size pores.
