The deterioration of lubricating oils in internal combustion engines can be evaluated by various parameters like viscosity, total base number (TBN), humidity and solids content, produced by abrasive wear. The experiments are aimed to design acapacitive sensor for online measurements in cars in order to substitude extensive external analysis.The sensoring principle is based by the inter-dependence between oil deterioration or variance in the lubricant characteristics and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ELS) data. The present article shows the sensor principle, the sensor construction, the measuring method, the evaluation of the sensor signals and first results. Correlations between these results and value of chemical and physical reference measurements are discussed.
