Ube reports fall in profits, sales

Ube Industries reported a 35.5% fall in net profits for its fiscal first 9 months, ended 31 December 2012, compared with the year-ago period, to ￥12.5 billion ($133 million). Nine-month sales decreased 1.4%, to ￥464.4 billion. Chemicals and plastics segment recorded a 6.4% fall in 9-month sales, to ￥162.9 billion. Segment operating profits decreased 78%, to ￥4.3 billion. Caprolactam sales were affected by the global economic slowdown as well as the supply and demand situation in China as a result of the start-up of facilities of competitors.
