Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS)

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released an interim final rule in April 2007, which went into effect in June 2007, that directs DHS to identify, assess, and ensure effective security at high-risk chemical facilities under the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2007. The purpose of the rule is to prevent the intentional misuse of hazardous chemicals through theft, sabotage, or attack. It requires chemical facilities to prepare "Security Vulnerability Assessment, SVA" and then develop and implement "Site Security Plans, SSP".
