Scientists recognize various kinds of feathers, they speak for instance of contour feathers, semiplumes, down feathers, bristles or filoplumes. For our purposes contourfeathers only are important. They basically consist of: 1. A long tapered section,the rachis 2. This rachis bears branches called barbs. These barbs on each side of the rachis form a sheet known as vane. 3. A barb consists of an axis, the ramus, and many closely spaced branches, the barbules. 4. Barbules may bear diverse outgrows, collectively called barbicels. Hooklet-shaped ones are generally known as hooklets.
