Marl CDT Unit Due Online at Year- End, Industry Working to Fill Gap

Evonik Industries, three weeks after an explosion and fre at its cyclo- decatriene (CDT) plant at Marl, Germany, which supplied the bulk of global volumes of CDT, a nylon-12 precursor, is ofering a number of substitutes for nylon-12 in small quantities. The disruption to output of CDT has caused shortages of nylon-12, afecting the automotive sector in particular. Evonik now expects the CDT plant to be back online in the fourth quarter of this year. Evonik says that substitutes will be available “only in smaller volumes during plant repairs.” BASF, which produces CDT but not nylon-12, says that "to the extent pos- sible, BASF will provide all available CDT volumes not already com- mitted to the industry in order to support the nylon-12 value chain."
